Fellow Educators,

We hope you all have had a good first semester and that each of you is looking forward to a well-deserved break for the winter holiday. Please don't hesitate to call or email questions regarding information shared below.

December's Update includes:

2018-19 AP/IB/CIE Teacher Bonus Pay
Legislation governing AP/IB/CIE Teacher Bonus Pay has been updated by the General Assembly. The updated legislation changes the grade requirement for Cambridge AICE exams bonus program from grade E to a grade C or better. Teachers are eligible for AP/IB/CIE bonus pay if they remain teaching in the same LEA or charter school the following year until January 1 of the corresponding school year that the bonus is paid.  Please find attached below the 2018 AP/IB/CIE Teacher Bonus Pay FAQ.

2018-19 AP/IB/CIE NC Exam and Registration Fees Guidance
The 2018 AP/IB/CIE NC Exam and Registration Fees Guidance explains the process regarding payment of 2018-19 AP/IB/CIE Exam and Registration fees.  Please find attached below the 2018 NC Exam and Registration Fee Guidance.

2018 Advanced Courses Report to the NC General Assembly
The 2018 Broaden Successful Participation in Advanced Courses Report to the NC General Assembly was discussed and approved by the State Board of Education during their December meeting. The report continues to show increases in student participation in advanced courses and improvement in performance on advanced course exams. This continued success is a result of hard work by NC's teachers and districts and the investment by NC to broaden access and successful participation in advanced courses. With NCAPP's sustained efforts of professional development and technical assistance, the State Board of Education and NCDPI expect continued progress to increase access and successful participation in Advanced Placement courses across NC and further meet the intent of the legislation. Please find attached below the 2018 Advanced Courses Report to the NC General Assembly.

Congratulations to NC's AP Honor Roll Districts
  • Yancey County Schools (2nd year in a row!)
  • Lexington City Schools
These school districts are recognized by the College Board and the State Board of Education for increasing the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher in a 3-year period. Reaching these goals shows that these districts are successfully identifying and supporting students to be motivated, academically prepared, and ready for AP.

Any questions related to course codes may be submitted via the NCDPI Support Center portal at: https://nc-myit.us.onbmc.com.

Updates from College Board - NCAPP
Severe Weather Planning for AP Exam Administration 2019
If your schools were impacted by the hurricanes this year, they may want to consider late AP exam testing. Severe weather can cause schools to close unexpectedly and impact the number of net instructional days in the school year. The College Board’s first priority in all instances of severe weather is the safety of students and school staff. Schools can contact AP Services for Educators (877-274-6474) prior to March 31, 2019, to order alternate exams for late testing. AP Services for Educators will advise districts and schools on next steps. To review the process for ordering alternate exams for late testing, schools can refer to the 2018-19 AP Coordinators Manual, available online at https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-coordinators-manual-2018-2019.pdf. School closure due to severe weather is an approved reason for late testing. Schools that order late tests due to severe weather will not incur additional fees.  Please see the attached FAQ for additional guidance.

AP Mentoring: Spring Support Scholarships
AP Mentoring provides online, teacher-to-teacher support for AP teachers of all experience levels in AP Computer Science Principles, AP English Literature and Composition, or AP U.S. History, allowing them to enhance their teaching skills and strengthen student performance by connecting with expert AP teachers who have years of instructional experience and deep content knowledge.  NCAPP is pleased to offer AP Mentoring Spring Support scholarships, which provide four virtual mentoring sessions in the months before the AP Exam administration.
NCAPP will award each district one (1) scholarship to cover program expenses for (1) one teacher in either AP Computer Science Principles, AP English Literature and Composition, or AP U.S. History Spring Support program ($399 value).  Districts are responsible for teacher/subject choice. Districts who want additional teachers to be enrolled may do so, but they will be responsible for those additional costs (for more information see http://www.collegeboard.org/apmentoring ). Districts or schools should complete the registration form found at http://bit.ly/NCAPPMentoringSpring to register their teacher for the program. Upon receipt of the teacher’s information, AP Mentoring will email the teacher directly to have them complete their profile information and match them with a mentor. We ask districts to register teachers no later than Dec. 24, 2018.  Please note that if a teacher is already enrolled in the year-long AP Mentoring program for 2018-19, this scholarship is redundant and should not be used for that particular teacher.

AP 2019-20
Starting with the 2019-20 school year, AP students and teachers will benefit from a suite of new online resources throughout the year: an AP question bank, subject specific unit guides, personal progress checks for students, and a performance dashboard for teachers to monitor the progress of their students. These resources are designed to help AP teachers provide students with focused instruction and actionable feedback throughout the year. All of these resources are free, and will be available for all 38 AP courses.  In order to gain access to these materials and to improve the registration and ordering system, AP coordinators will place AP exam orders in the fall in 2019, using a new online registration and ordering system. They will receive personalized student registration labels that will greatly reduce time-consuming bubbling of student information before the exam.
A presentation to help you share these changes with your colleagues is available at  https://goo.gl/qTSZR9.  Attached is a handout on the new resources to share with your AP colleagues, as well as a district plan for the roll out of AP 2019, which offers best practices and a timeline to prepare and implement these changes. NC DPI and NCAPP will also partner to deliver a face-to-face training later this spring to help district and school leaders prepare, so stay tuned for that announcement in the new year.

Thank you all for your dedication and hard work to increase student participation and success in advanced courses in North Carolina. Please continue to reach out to us in the Division of Advanced Learning and Gifted Education at NCDPI whenever we can support your work.
We wish each of you, as well as your family and friends, a wonderful holiday season.
